Amy Cole Lost Her Mind #CoverReveal

Today on my blog I have a cover reveal for you for Elizabeth McGivern's  book Amy Cole Has Lost Her Mind.

About the book

Amy Cole is a stay-at-home mum and a woman on the edge.

After a very public breakdown and failed suicide attempt, Amy finds herself trying to make it through her everyday life as a high-functioning zombie.

Elle De Bruyn is a force of nature ready to shake Amy back to life whether she likes it or not.

After a fortuitous meeting, the two embark on a journey together which will change them both and help them find out exactly what they’re capable of when rock bottom is just the beginning.

About Elizabeth McGivern

Elizabeth McGivern is a former journalist turned hostage-in-her-own-home surrounded by three men and a horrible dog named Dougal.

In an effort to keep her sanity she decided to write a parenting blog after the birth of her first son so she can pinpoint the exact moment she failed as a mother.

In an unexpected turn of events, the blog helped her to find a voice and connect with parents in similar situations; namely those who were struggling with mental health issues and parenting. It was because of this encouragement – and wanting to avoid her children as much as possible – her debut novel, Amy Cole has lost her mind, was born.

Elizabeth lives in Northern Ireland although wishes she could relocate to Iceland on a daily basis. To witness her regular failings as a parent you can find her on: www.mayhemandbeyond.com

Many thanks to Jess Lowe  for providing the picture.

End Game - Matt Johnson #Extract #Blog Tour

Today, I am on the blog tour for End Game by Matt Johnson and have an extract for you to enjoy.

This is the final instalment in the critically acclaimed Robert Finlay series, as his past continues to haunt him…

 THE BOOK

Robert Finlay seems to have finally left his SAS past behind him and is settled into his new career as a detective. But when the girlfriend of his former SAS colleague and close friend Kevin Jones is murdered, it’s clear that Finlay’s troubles are far from over. Jones is arrested for the killing, but soon escapes from jail, and Finlay is held responsible for the breakout. Suspended from duty and sure he’s being framed too, our hero teams up with MI5 agent Toni Fellowes to find out who’s behind the conspiracy. Their quest soon reveals a plot that goes to the very heart of the UK’s security services. End Game, the final part in the critically acclaimed Robert Finlay trilogy, sees our hero in an intricately plotted and terrifyingly fast-paced race to uncover the truth and escape those who’d sooner have him dead than be exposed.

About the Author

Matt Johnson served as a soldier and Metropolitan Police officer for twentyfive years. Blown off his feet at the London Baltic Exchange bombing in 1993, and one of the first police officers on the scene of the 1982 Regent’s Park bombing, Matt was also at the Libyan People’s Bureau shooting in 1984 where he escorted his mortally wounded friend and colleague, Yvonne Fletcher, to hospital. Hidden wounds took their  toll. In 1999, Matt was discharged from the police with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. While undergoing treatment, he was encouraged by his counsellor to write about his career and his experience of murders, shootings and terrorism. One evening, Matt sat at his computer and started to weave these notes into a work of fiction that he described as having a tremendously cathartic effect on his own condition. His bestselling thriller, Wicked Game, which was shortlisted for the CWA John Creasey Dagger, was the result. Deadly Game and now End Game, the final book in the

Robert Finaly series, once again draws on Matt’s experiences and drips with the same raw authenticity of its predecessor.

Excerpt from Chapter 4

Howard scanned the notes on his desk.

If there was one very important thing he had learned in his life with the Security Service, it was to be thorough. Be it the creation of a cover story, a fake identity, the logistics supporting an operation, even an answer to a parliamentary question; all warranted appropriate diligence.

And yet, he was troubled. The job was done, complete, and what had at first appeared to be a situation likely to threaten both the national and his own personal security had been averted. The irritant that was Chas Collins had been removed, his manuscript recovered and both he and his literary agent had been taken care of. But things hadn’t gone as smoothly as they ought to have done. Grady had very nearly been compromised and the Belgium side of the clean-up had experienced unexpected delays when Collins had proved hard to locate. And now there was yet another problem.

As Howard sat back in his chair and arched his back in an attempt to ease the discomfort that had settled there during the last hour, the grey telephone on the desk rang twice and then stopped abruptly, interrupting his train of thought.

He waited. Five seconds later, the phone rang again. He picked up the receiver.

‘Sir,’ he began, having already guessed the identity of the caller.

‘Do you have it?’

‘We do. Both targets are black-bagged. And it was as we’d thought: Collins was trying to be clever by avoiding electronic back-ups. He and Mrs Price had the only hard copies and we have them both.’

‘Very good. Your usual efficiency, Howard.’

‘Thank you, sir.’ If only he knew, Howard thought.

‘Have you had a chance to look through the draft?’

‘I have. Your decision proved correct, the book would have exposed a crucial aspect of our Islamic intelligence-gathering operation.’

‘We can count ourselves lucky.’

‘Indeed.’ Howard took a deep breath. There was no time like the present; and it appeared the Director was in a good enough mood to handle the news. ‘There is a new problem, however.’

‘A related problem?’

‘I’m not certain at this stage, but quite possibly,’ Howard said, and heard a deep sigh at the other end of the line.

‘Presumably, your mentioning it means it’s something I need to know about?’

‘I think it’s best you do, yes,’ Howard answered.

‘Let’s hear it then.’

‘Very well. Someone has Googled the name. I had a notification from GCHQ a couple of days ago.’

‘That’s unfortunate. Do we have a source?’

‘Not as yet. But I’m working on it.’

‘I predicted this, you will recall. There really were too many potential leaks.’

‘And I’ve always argued we needed to be proactive. Ask any decent surgeon – sometimes it’s necessary to destroy good tissue to ensure the whole tumour is removed.’

‘You’re referring to the two policemen?’ said the Director.

‘Amongst others – all represent potential exposure risks.’

We’ve had this debate before, Howard, I don’t intend to repeat myself.’

‘I understand. I’ll keep you posted with regards to the Google search.’

The Director ended the call. Howard replaced the telephone receiver and then flicked through the scattered papers in front of him until he found what he was looking for. It was a photograph of a group of heavily armed soldiers in desert fatigues – some standing, some crouched – posing at the rear of a C-130 transport aircraft. He studied the photograph for a moment, mentally ticking off the names as he scanned the faces.

Finally, his gaze came to rest on one man. He half smiled as he muttered quietly to himself. ‘Soon, old friend,’ he promised. ‘Very soon.’

Don’t know about you but I like the sound of this and must admit I have never read a book in this series but this will be sorted soon I promise.

Tess and Tattoos #BlogTour #Extract

Today is the last day for the blog blitz of Tess and Tattoos by H.A. Leuschel and I have an extract post for you to enjoy.  Thanks to Rachel's Random Resources.

I’m also lucky enough to be able to hosting the link for the chance to win a signed copy of Manipulated Lives by H.A. Leuschel.  This is open Internationally and link is below for the chance to enter.

Hello and thank you very much for inviting me to ‘Reading For Pleasure’!

Malignant manipulation can be found anywhere, at any age and in many guises. However, when a victim manages to change the way they look at their abuser, the person they look at also changes. It is a freeing as well as terrifying experience but is a vital moment in understanding the spiral of toxic manipulation they’d been sucked into and to recognize what it is they need to avoid in the future. It is therefore useful for anyone to spot warning signs, speak up before it is too late, so a loved one, colleague or friend knows that when the time is right, they can turn to you for support.

In ‘Tess and Tattoos’, it is friendship that ultimately will bind two women together and help them both in their endeavour to find purpose and peace.

 Tess and Tattoos

A suspenseful and emotional novella exploring whether we can ever be free from our past mistakes.

In this story, the reader is taken on a compelling journey into the human mind where genuine friendship offers the key to inner peace.

Meet Tess, an elderly lady living in a care home apartment in the outskirts of Edinburgh, whose past is haunted by a wrong decision. She meets Nurse Sandra, a warm and bubbly single mother of three, who is instantly intrigued by Tess’s personality and the mystery that surrounds her.

‘Tess and Tattoos’ is one of five gripping stories in HA Leuschel’s story collection Manipulated Lives centred around psychological manipulation.

Tess was startled by how quickly Sandra had been able to notice her art. It was the one activity, organised twice a week, that she never missed, whether she had a cold or was feeling shaky that day or not. Her favourite place for sketching had become the sunroom on the second floor, where she could observe the gardeners at work most days and trace her pencil until she found the shape she was looking for, concentrating on the right proportions. Art was such a release for Tess; the wonderful experience of putting a brush or pencil to paper and making something come to life. The hours would fly by as quickly as birds disturbed by footsteps on a path. For many years she’d had to push her passion aside due to her partner’s comments that her work was mediocre or, that in any case, she was wasting her time over something that didn’t make money. The world had to be measured in numbers and if those numbers weren’t long enough, they were not worth considering. She swallowed the bitter thought that arose like stomach acid from thinking about the past. She shrugged, as if a fly had sat on her shoulder, and looked up at Sandra’s bright face.

‘Well, it keeps me going really. There is not much else I can do these days.’ She ended her comment with a wink.

‘As much as I’d love to stay a bit longer, I need to continue my rounds, Tess. It was a pleasure to meet you and thank you very much for the tea and biscuits. Just what the doctor ordered.’ She giggled and, for a short instant, she looked like a young girl as her hand reached up to her hair, swept an escaping curl out of her face and tucked it behind her ear, before she brushed her uniform into shape.

‘The pleasure is all mine,’ Tess said. A good observer would have noticed that upon Sandra’s last words, Tess’s shoulders dropped slightly and a small sigh escaped her pale lips. Within seconds she was going to be alone again, thinking about how to fill the next hours of the day.

A Child Inside - Sharon Shaw #BlogTour #Extract

Today on my blog, I am the last stop for A Child Inside by Sharon Shaw and have an excerpt post for you today.

Blurb / Information about A Child Inside
A Child Inside: understanding, healing and freedom following childhood abuse and trauma
Sharon Shaw is a respected psychotherapist specialising in cases of childhood sexual, emotional and mental abuse. Few of Shaw’s clients would know that her brilliance as a therapist comes from profound personal experience. Her early life has inspired and informed her therapeutic techniques, now shared in this remarkable book, A Child Inside: understanding, healing and freedom following childhood abuse and trauma. Now an adult woman with the language and training to explain and analyse her experiences of abuse, Shaw revisits herself as that damaged child, with the support of her personal counsellor, her mother and other important safe connections. She reveals a frightened child, lost in a world that was not safe for her, trapped in a body and with a developing brain that wasn’t yet mature enough to understand and articulate the horrors she was experiencing, thinking and feeling, all of which conflicted with what she had been taught by family and society at large: she knew they were meant to protect her but why had they failed to do so? A Child Inside explores the complex issues of trust and responsibility between adults and children, charting the progression from acute distress through cognitive and intuitive understanding and ultimately towards forgiveness.
I am someone who finds true life books quite a hard but riveting read at the same time and therefore couldn’t wait to say yes to this blog tour when I saw it was happening.  I just wished I had had the capacity to read the book but unfortunately my list of books to read is quite big at present.   I therefore said yes (or rather jumped at the chance and said yes) to the excerpt post.
Excerpt

Introduction

These extracts show for me my journey of development in how I now am now more complete in understanding myself and how I move to gain personal understanding, allowing me to heal and giving myself control to be able to respond to people within love to defend myself or to try to teach others. They show my personal power, what I lost as a child and what I have re-gained as an adult but now with language, more wisdom and more love.

It was November and Adam was nowhere near completing the garage. Adam came at the end of November to say he was going to be moving in with his new partner at her Mum and Dad’s house just before Christmas. I was shocked and asked him if he had really thought about it and wondered whether he thought it was too fast. I also asked him if he had thought about our children, with it being Christmas, and how this would impact on them. Adam said that it wasn’t fair on his new partner that he was still living with his ex-partner, and that she had been OK about it but now both of them had fallen in love with each other. Adam said that he would come back on Christmas Day to be here when our children open their presents, but that he wanted to introduce them to her before then and for our children to spend time with them both over Christmas. I said that I thought it was quick, but it was up to him. Even though I was shocked, I wasn’t shocked that he was moving in with his new partner as my intuition told me that he would move that way. I was shocked at the speed and the lack of consideration for our children. I was aware that I felt anxious about our children meeting Adam’s new partner, but I was unsure where these feelings really sat and whether there more feelings that were underneath it all. I knew I needed time to reflect and work out where I was emotionally and cognitively about what was going to happen. We agreed that Adam would continue to support the house and bills till February to give me more time to get more work, then he would pay maintenance and half of the mortgage till our children were 18. My intuition was saying this wouldn’t happen, that Adam wouldn’t continue to commit to paying for the house till our children were 18, but I went along with what he was saying.

Afterwards I acknowledged that I felt nervous and anxious about our children meeting Lisa because of my experiences with Barry and Jane; I didn’t want my children to experience what I had. I also knew I had no control over what Adam chose to do, that he was their father as well as me being their mother and I wanted our children to have a great relationship with both of us. I had learned lots from my own life experiences and I admitted to myself that I also felt a bit jealous of my children building a relationship with Lisa and Adam without me, that they would have another life. I remembered being a child when my Mum and Dad separated, all I wanted to do was to love everyone and for everyone to love and get on together. I told myself that my children will love me no matter what, and I wanted to create that balance and for them to love whoever they want to love. I didn’t want to dictate to them who they should love. I wanted my children to be happy, I wanted Adam to be happy, and I wanted to be happy.

Our children met Lisa and they came back excited, explaining to me what she was like; our children liked her. I could see through what they were saying that she seemed really nice, and I relaxed more. Adam moved out. I promised myself I would always try to be aware of any of my emotions that would come up, and that I would always move to explore them and my thoughts and listen to my intuition so that I had more self-awareness. I had realised that this process gave me understanding, acceptance and self-control into how I reacted to situations and people, I also acknowledged that I was starting to feel happier and freer as I was starting to feel more complete…

Awaken
Oh my God! Where have I been!!
Have I been living in a dream?
I feel I am awakening from my daze,
Opening my eyes and now willing to embrace,
A wholeness within, but I am unsure where to begin.
What I know is that I must share my story as I unfold,
Which I feel connects me with a story untold.
A story that connects me with thee, and thee with We.
To which I feel is yet still to be disclosed.
Understanding I feel is the key, then comes acceptance of me and then of thee,
with empathy ‘I’ becomes a ‘We’.

Who was I? A 8-year-old girl that had love, peace and happiness that I wanted to share with others. I had privileges, not in that I had money or status, but in that I had attachments that showed me unconditional love – my mother and my family. I believe we all lost our way through painful experiences, becoming disappointed, angry, jealous and disillusioned. Who am I now? A woman who has privileges, again not in money or status, but in finding attachments (who were strangers to start with: friends, teachers, ex-partner, tutors and my counsellor). Through them giving me their time to listen to me, my story and accepting all of me, my thoughts, emotion and behaviour so that I could understand myself within my painful experiences past and present, developing my intuition, these people’s past and present interactions with me helped me to heal myself… I will never forget my guardians and I am eternally grateful but I will always remember that I am… my saviour.

Well what do you think?  Bit different for me than my usual blog posts, but I enjoyed this extract.
