Don't You Dare, A J Waines #BlogTour #GuestPost

Don’t You Dare

Today I am pleased to be able to participate in the blog tour for Don’t You Dare by A J Waines.  My thanks go to  Sarah Hardy at Bloodhound Books.

About the Book

What if your daughter becomes your enemy?

When barmaid, Rachel, discovers her soon-to-be-married daughter, Beth, pinned down by a stranger in the pub cellar, Rachel lashes out in panic and the intruder ends up dead. In desperation, Rachel convinces Beth they should cover up the crime and go ahead with the planned wedding in one month’s time.

Rachel, however, has her own reasons for not involving the police.

Hiding their dreadful secret is harder than they both imagined and as the big day approaches and the lies multiply, Beth becomes a liability. Rachel looks on in dismay at the hen party when, after too many drinks, Beth declares she’s about to make a special announcement. But before Beth can say a word, she disappears...

When two people share a chilling secret, can both hold their nerve?

This book explores the dark side of a mother-daughter relationship when pushed to the limit.

It will appeal to fans of authors like Ruth Ware, Clare Mackintosh and C.L. Taylor.

Guest Post

Grab a comfy seat and a nice drink and sit down to joint me as A J Waines talks about her new edge-of-the-seat Psychological Thriller.

To start with I can inform you that AJ Waines was a London psychotherapist, often working with ex-offenders, before she began transforming her experiences into gripping material for her own Psychological Thrillers. With her seventh novel about to be released, she has sold over 450,000 books and has been a number one bestselling author in the entire UK and Australian Kindle charts. Fascinated by secrets, lies and anything hidden under floorboards, she writes sinister suspense thrillers with mind-bending twists at the end!

Now let me hand over to A J Waines.

You latest book is called Don’t you Dare - what is it about?

In Don’t you Dare, a mistake, then a misunderstanding leave a mother and daughter trapped in a terrible dilemma that will affect their lives forever. Neither of them plans to commit a crime, but due to the way events unfold, something terrible takes place that sends their lives spiralling out of control. Don’t you Dare also explores what happens when two people are forced to share a chilling secret and one of them loses their nerve. It’s the kind of situation that almost anyone could find themselves in!

It’s perfect for fans of Ruth Ware, C.L Taylor and Clare Mackintosh!

Can you give us the opening sentences?

I knew something was wrong the moment I slipped the key into the lock.

A light was visible through the keyhole. I teased the door open a fraction and stopped dead. The fluorescent strip light wasn’t the source, instead there was a dim glow at the far end of the cellar…

What inspired you to write this book?

I’ve always been fascinated by what makes people tick. In my work for fifteen years as a psychotherapist, I was privileged to gain access to clients’ hidden inner worlds, helping them explore the motives for their actions, the things they feared, the things they were ashamed of. These themes are present in all my novels. In Don’t you Dare, I particularly wanted to look at the changing dynamic between a mother and daughter after something terrible happens. It starts off with a simple misunderstanding – the kind of misjudgment any one of us could make and there’s a big twist at the end!

What lies below the surface of this book?

In Don’t you Dare, I wanted to show the different ways Rachel (mother) and Beth (her twenty-three-year-old daughter) cope in covering up a dreadful crime. A battle of wills unfolds as Rachel takes charge and Beth turns into a liability. It poses all kinds of moral dilemmas, such as: How can you make your daughter understand your rash actions when you can’t possibly tell her the truth? How do you stop her from blurting out your crime when she’s the queen of oversharing? It’s a nail-biting ride!

How many books have you written?

Don’t you Dare will be my seventh novel and there will be another later in 2018, the third in my series, featuring Dr Samantha Willerby. The books can be read in any order, even the series books, which can also stand alone:

The Evil Beneath

Girl on a Train

Dark Place to Hide

No Longer Safe

Inside the Whispers (Dr Samantha Willerby Series, Book 1)

Lost in the Lake (Dr Samantha Willerby Series, Book 2)

What is your work schedule like?

I’m at my desk at around 8am and apart from a mini break at lunch, I tend to stay there all day  and have to be peeled away from my keyboard when it’s supper time. I take notebooks with me everywhere if I need to go out, and I’m always jotting down ideas, but I can never focus in a park or coffee shop to do the real work. I wish I could! I can only work at home in my study with nothing but silence around me. For some jobs (answering emails, monthly accounts), I can have music playing (Mozart’s Requiem is a favourite), but not during the creative cycle itself, such as plotting, drafting, editing. My work involves many different areas, including interviews and social media publicity, so it’s incredibly varied and I never get bored.

Don’t you Dare will be published by Bloodhound Books on May 8th  and is available from all Amazon outlets.
